❤️ Homemade Bone Broth: Nutrient-Dense & Budget-Friendly!

Looking to boost your gut health and immunity while making the most of your food scraps? This simple bone broth method turns kitchen leftovers into a nutrient-dense superfood!

Basic Bone Broth Recipe

This budget-friendly method uses bones and vegetable scraps you'd normally throw away!

  • 1-2 kg (2-4 lbs) bones (chicken, beef, or fish bones)
  • 4 cups vegetable scraps (onion skins, carrot ends, celery leaves, herb stems)
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (helps extract minerals from bones)
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 5-6 peppercorns
  • Water to cover everything
  • 1 tsp salt (optional, add at the end)

Equipment needed:

  • Large pot or slow cooker
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Glass jars for storage
  • Large bowl

Instructions:

  1. Save bones from your meals (roast chicken, beef bones, fish heads)
  2. Collect vegetable scraps in a bag in your freezer until you have enough
  3. Place bones and vegetable scraps in your pot or slow cooker
  4. Add apple cider vinegar - this helps draw out minerals and collagen
  5. Add enough water to cover everything by about 2 inches
  6. Add bay leaf and peppercorns
  7. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer
  8. For stove top: simmer for 12-24 hours (add water as needed)
  9. For slow cooker: cook on low for 24-48 hours
  10. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a large bowl
  11. Discard solids (they've given up all their nutrients)
  12. Add salt if desired
  13. Let cool, then store in glass jars in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for months

Healing Ginger-Turmeric Variation

  • Basic bone broth
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, sliced
  • 1 tbsp fresh turmeric, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tsp black pepper (helps absorb turmeric)

Instructions:

  1. Add ginger, turmeric, garlic, and black pepper to your bone broth during the last 2 hours of cooking
  2. Continue simmering as usual
  3. Strain as directed in the basic recipe
  4. This golden broth is excellent for reducing inflammation and boosting immunity
  5. Drink 1-2 cups daily when feeling under the weather or as a preventative measure
  6. The warming spices make it especially comforting during cold months
