❤️ Homemade Yogurt: Simple & Budget-Friendly!
This DIY yogurt method is incredibly easy and requires no special equipment!
Basic Homemade Yogurt Recipe
This foolproof method uses just your room heater and common kitchen items!
- 1 liter milk (whole milk works best)
- 2 tablespoons store-bought plain yogurt (with live active cultures)
Equipment needed:
- Clean glass jar with lid
- Steel cooking bowl (larger than the jar)
- Spoon
- Room heater (electric or gas)
- Kitchen thermometer (if available)
Instructions:
- Heat the milk in a pot until it just begins to boil (around 85°C/185°F), then let it cool to about 45°C/113°F (lukewarm; you should be able to keep your finger in it comfortably).
- Stir in the 2 tablespoons of store-bought yogurt until well combined.
- Pour the mixture into your clean glass jar and seal with the lid.
- Place the glass jar inside the steel cooking bowl.
- Position the bowl on your heater set to the lowest temperature. The steel bowl will help distribute the heat evenly without cooking the yogurt.
- Leave for 8-12 hours (overnight works well). The longer it sits, the more sour it will become.
- Once set, refrigerate for at least 6 hours (or overnight) before serving. It will thicken further as it chills.
Flavor Variation
Love fruity yogurt? This version is for you! 🍓
- Basic homemade yogurt
- Fresh or frozen fruit of your choice
- Honey/Maple Syrup (optional)
Instructions:
- Take your chilled homemade yogurt and stir until smooth.
- Mash your chosen fruit (berries work great!) and fold into the yogurt.
- Add honey or maple syrup as desired (optional).
- For best flavor, let it sit in the refrigerator for an hour before eating to allow the flavors to fuse.
